PHE Approved COVID-19 Testing

We are able to offer our clients both types of PHE approved testing for COVID-19. The Abbott antibody test is available to add to all our health assessments and the PCR swab test is available to buy over the phone as a home testing kit (please see terms below).

ANTIBODY TESTPCR SWAB TEST

 ANTIBODY TEST

An antibody test (PHE approved) to find out if you have previously had COVID-19. Please note this test can be added to all our health assessments and is currently not available to buy online.

Coronavirus – COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) IgG Antibody

The Abbott antibody test is a blood test  to check immune response if you have previously been infected with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus using gold standard laboratory methods. This is most accurate if done 14 days or more after the first symptoms of infection. This can be added to your assessment and is taken as a venous sample during your day at Preventicum. Results are available in 24 hours.

ANTIBODY TEST

Please note: this test can be added to all our health assessments and is currently not available to buy online.

The antibody test is a blood test  to check immune response if you have previously been infected with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus using gold standard laboratory methods.

It is not yet known if an individual with a positive result showing presence of IgG levels following being infected with SARS-CoV-2 will be protected, either fully or partially from future infection, or for how long protective immunity may last. Research continues in this area.

How do I perform the test?

Please note: This test is included in all our health assessments and is taken by venous blood sample by a member of our medical team. The information below is for those who have previously ordered a home testing kit:
  • Complete the test request form with your name, DOB, sex and date of collection
  • Open the pack of lancets, then locate the finger to be used – your ring or little finger is best for collecting the sample.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Use the wipes provided to clean your finger and dry this with a tissue. It is important that the finger is completely dry as the blood will not form a drop if the finger is wet.
  • Take one lancet from the bag, twist and remove the cap. Your lancet is now ready to use.
  • Position the lancet gently against your fingertip, when ready, press the lancet firmly against the skin and hold steady for at least 3 seconds. The lancet functions automatically. If you need more blood repeat this step with another lancet and another finger.
  • Using a clean tissue wipe away the first drop of blood
  • To encourage blood flow hold hand in a downward position and firmly massage the side of your hand down to your finger.
  • Allow the blood to drip into the tube continuing to milk your hand and finger to keep the blood flowing. You can touch the drops against the edge of the tube to detach them from the finger.
  • Collect blood to the upper line of the tube. Repeat for any extra tubes in the pack.
  • When the tube is filled cover the finger tip with the plaster, and apply pressure if needed to stop the bleeding.
  • Firmly twist and push on the cap of the collection tube until you hear a click.
  • Invert the collection tube
  • Affix the label with your details on the tube. Unlabelled samples cannot be accepted.
  • Place the tube in the protective packing and post in the pre-paid envelope.
  • Samples should be posted the same day

Testing should ideally be undertaken 14 days or more following exposure or onset of symptoms. The incubation period of COVID-19 ranges from between 1 to 14 days, with the majority of cases manifesting with symptoms at 3 – 5 days. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, dry cough and difficulty breathing. These symptoms have the potential to develop into a very severe acute respiratory illness. Evidence shows that fatality rates increase with age, gender, body weight, ethnicity and comorbidities.

The host immune system reacts to the infection by SARS-CoV-2 by producing antibodies from a few days to 2 weeks and beyond. Specific IgG antibodies are produced in the later stages of infection to SARS-CoV-2, and are detectable after RNA is no longer detectable.

The persistence of IgG antibodies allows identification of people who have been infected by SARS-CoV-2. Test development relating to SARS-CoV-2 is rapidly evolving. Laboratory review of new assays as they become available is essential.

How and when will I receive my results?

The results will be available one day after the laboratory has received your test kit. We will send you your results securely via email.

What will the results tell me?

This test for IgG antibodies measures whether you have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in your blood with 100% sensitivity if 14 days or more after the first symptoms of a covid-19 illness Essentially it can tell us if you have previously had COVID-19.

What we still don’t understand is how long immunity lasts for and research is ongoing.

how accurate is the test?

It is 100% sensitive and has a specificity of 99.6% in patients tested 14 days after starting to show symptoms

The test looks for specific IgG antibodies, which appear during an established immune reaction, rather than IgM antibodies which are triggered by an acute immune response and are therefore less reliable.

Interpretation of Results

COV-2 IgG

< 1.4  – Not Detected (Negative)

COV-2 IgG

>= 1.4 – Detected (Positive)

Results should be used in conjunction with information available from clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures. It has been recognised that there can be delayed responses in immunocompromised patients.

PCR SWAB TEST – £225

A PCR swab test (PHE approved) to find out if you currently have the virus. The swab test is currently only available to Preventicum clients and is suitable for you if you have symptoms of COVID-19, are about to have an operation or need to travel for work.

PCR SWAB TEST £225.00

Over the last 6-8 weeks the number of COVID cases in the community has been steadily rising. This has led to an increase in COVID-19 PCR testing across all UK Public, NHS and Private laboratories.

Whilst increasing, nobody was expecting to see the really sizeable increase in demand for testing with the recent reopening of schools, and international travel for either holiday or work.  No amount of modelling or planning could have prepared laboratories for a demand that is now outstripping capacity by three or four times. This sudden jump in test numbers has placed obvious pressure, not just on testing laboratories, but on laboratory support teams too. We are therefore, adding these restrictions to the ordering of COVID-19 PCR tests.

Please do not order a test if the request is for holiday travel or if you do not have symptoms of COVID-19.

We can only order tests for the following clients:

  • Clients who have Covid symptoms
  • Clients who are being admitted to hospital
  • Clients who need to travel for work purposes

The swab test involves swabs taken from your nose and throat and uses RT-PCR testing to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA. This is the preferred method by Public Health England (PHE), recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and used by the NHS. The results are available in 3 working days.

Please email sales@preventicum.co.uk or call 020 76056900 to purchase a test and a member of our team will get back to you (Monday – Friday). This test can only be used by adults aged 18 and over.

Your order will take 24 hours to process from the time we receive it and will then be sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm, included in the price.

If you are a Preventicum client and have not received a discount code, please call 020 7605 6900 or email sales@preventicum.co.uk for details. Please note that if more than one test is purchased we will need individual details per test kit for PHE data collection.

When and how will I get my results?

The results will be available 2-3 days after the laboratory have received your test. We will send you your results securely via email.

As COVID-19 is a notifiable disease, if you have a positive swab result our laboratory will automatically inform PHE.

what will the results tell me?

The coronavirus swab test uses RT-PCR testing to detect  the presence of the virus RNA, and if it is positive this confirms you currently have COVID-19.. If it comes back negative, then it is most likely you do not currently have the virus.

how accurate is the test?

The swab test which is PHE approved, has a specificity of 100%, and the sensitivity varies with swab technique but ranges between 80-90%, and with no reactivity with other viruses.

As with all viral PCR assays, patients with very low viral loads are less likely to be detected. ‘Not detected’ results do not preclude infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and should not be the sole basis of a patient treatment/management or public health decision. Where there is a strong clinical suspicion of an early COVID-19 infection repeat sampling should be considered 24-48 hours later in case of a false negative result.

Results should be interpreted by a trained professional in conjunction with the patient’s history and clinical signs and symptoms, and epidemiological risk factors.

The testing kit has not been made by or on behalf of Preventicum. We cannot give any warranties or assurances regarding the effectiveness of the testing kit.

CANCER 30 GENE PANEL

Overview

All of us have a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of cancer, but some common cancers – breast, melanoma, pancreatic, prostate and ovarian – are known to occur more frequently in families, passing from one generation to the next. This is because certain gene mutations can be inherited.

Perhaps the most commonly talked about are the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes, where mutations can indicate increased risk of developing breast, melanoma, pancreatic, prostate and ovarian cancers.

The 30-gene Pan Cancer Panel test from Everything Genetic, examines BRCA1 and BRCA2 and an additional 28 genes which can also indicate risk in the areas of uterine, colorectal (bowel) and stomach cancer.

Why have this test?

Knowing you have a genetic mutation enables you to make sure you have the appropriate regular screening and investigations. Many mutations are known to be hereditary; if you have a mutation, there is a 50% chance that your siblings and children will have it too.

What genes are tested?

Genes APC, ATM, BAP1, BARD1, BMPR1A, BRCA1, BRCA2, BRIP1, CDH1, CDK4*, CDKN2A(p14ARF), CDKN2A(p16INK4a), CHEK2, EPCAM*, GREM1*, MITF*, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, MUTYH, NBN, PALB2, PMS2*, POLD1*, POLE*, PTEN, RAD51C, RAD51D, SMAD4, STK11, TP53.

What does the test involve?

This test is a simple saliva test that you can do in the clinic on the day of your assessment, or in your own home of you prefer – we do not need a blood sample. If you choose to add this test after your health assessment, you will receive a kit in the post with clear instructions on taking your sample, together with all the paperwork you need to sign and post to Everything Genetic.

How long does reporting take?

Once your sample is received at the US laboratory, it will be sequenced, and your genes analysed. A report is then generated, usually within 5 weeks of the laboratory receiving your sample.

How will I get my results?

Your Preventicum doctor will explain the process in your consultation, and you will also have a counselling session with a consultant (usually the day after your Preventicum assessment) so you understand this fully before consenting for the test.

Once your genes have been analysed, you will be sent your results from Preventicum. If there are any positive findings you will also be contacted by a Consultant Geneticist to discuss these, the implications, and next steps. If the results are negative but you still wish to discuss these further, a consultation can be arranged at no extra charge.

Discussing your results with a geneticist and Preventicum doctor will help you to:

  • Understand your risks
  • Monitor your health
  • Consider your lifestyle or diet
  • Protect your family
