Introducing Bindex

Maintaining healthy bones is essential, however, regular screening for bone health has traditionally relied on DEXA scans which involve exposure to ionising radiation. At Preventicum, we are delighted to introduce Bindex® – a fast, accurate and radiation-free alternative. Bindex is included in all our assessments for female clients over 40 years old, who are at greatest risk of developing osteoporosis.

What is Bindex?

Bindex uses advanced ultrasound technology to assess bone quality and fracture risk, without exposure to radiation. The procedure is quick, painless and is performed by our expert Sonographers, Lauren and Anri who have been trained by Bindex specialists.

How is the test performed?

We have conducted a 3-month trial of Bindex and have seen excellent client feedback and clinical results. The measurement consists of a painless ultrasound scan of the left tibia (shinbone) that measures the cortical thickness of the tibia, providing detailed insights of bone health. Clients appreciate the simplicity of the scan which is performed after your ultrasound imaging that takes just 30 seconds as well as the peace of mind that comes from this non-invasive, radiation-free test.

When will I get my results?

Results are available on the day of your assessment and will be discussed in detail with your Preventicum Doctor before you leave. Bindex provides three clear outcomes:

  • normal bone health
  • borderline bone health with a recommendation to follow-up with a DEXA scan
  • indication of osteoporosis, in which case your Preventicum Doctor will advise a discussion with your GP or specialist about a treatment plan for osteoporosis.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose strength and are more likely to break. The word ‘osteoporosis’ means ‘porous bone’. Bones have a thick outer shell with a strong structure inside that looks like a honeycomb. With osteoporosis, the holes in the structure get bigger and the bone becomes less dense. Eventually, the inner structure begins to break down. This leads to bones getting weaker and makes them more likely to break. It is a silent disease as there are no symptoms until a fracture occurs.

How prevalent is osteoporosis in the UK, and what is the impact?

  • Half of women aged over 50 will experience fractures due to osteoporosis, and a fifth of men
  • 3.5 million people in UK with osteoporosis
  • 300,000+ fragility fractures annually in the UK
  • 1,150 hip fracture deaths per month
